Most MTSS systems are built to catch what has already happened: a failing grade, a missed attendance threshold, a discipline referral. Those signals matter, but they only describe a student after the fact, and they never explain why.

A balanced assessment system focuses on using the right data at the right time—not simply giving more tests. Schools should evaluate which assessments actually inform decisions, strengthen formative assessment and feedback, and provide ongoing coaching so effective practices stick. Most importantly, students should understand where they are, where they’re going, and what they need to do to succeed.

MTSS is more than a program it’s a system. Assessing readiness helps schools align structures, systems, and culture to ensure equitable, sustainable support for all learners.
