Bullying Prevention

With an increase in the visibility of school violence, the topic of bullying prevention is gaining momentum as a national priority in education. Bullying is a serious challenge that every educator needs to be prepared to address. Students who are bullied often lose interest in school, have trouble concentrating, do poorly academically, and frequently stay home from school; some students even drop out to avoid the traumatic experiences of being bullied.

For bullying prevention programs to truly work, the focus must move beyond the anti-bullying mindset. The emphasis must be placed on meaningful relationships, explicit instruction of positive social skills, and maintaining a culture or pro-kindness. The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) is the most researched and best-known bullying prevention program available today. Collaborative Learning Solutions offers a Certified OBPP Trainer to will work districts and/or school-sites to teach students skills such as empathy, compassion, and kindness. The primary focus of the Bully Prevention strategy is establishing a climate that turns by-standers into up-standers, which has demonstrated effectiveness in decreasing incidents of bullying.
