Dr. Jon Eyler

Chief Executive Officer

Jon founded Collaborative Learning Solutions in 2010 on the relentless desire to provide more effective behavioral and educational solutions for traditionally marginalized youth. Jon has worked in public education as a teacher and administrator through various levels of the system– school site, district, and county. His expertise is grounded in student behavior, discipline and disproportionality. Dr. Eyler has a keen sense of influence and leadership, which has resulted in strategic and sustainable changes in many organizations. In addition to his work as a consultant, he has served as an adjunct professor for the University of Southern California (USC) where he taught courses in Educational Psychology. Today, Jon serves as both a consultant and speaker for organizations across the nation.

Dr. Gail Angus

Executive Director

Gail brings more than 20 years of experience as a teacher and administrator at various levels in the K-12 system. She has been instrumental in leading large-scale system implementations involving Response to Intervention (RtI) and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). She is one of the primary designers of the Education Monitoring Team (EMT) model, a framework for addressing Tier 2 and 3 needs of students. Dr. Angus’ research on the effects of school-wide positive behavior interventions and supports on academic achievement has provided her opportunities to present on multiple state and national platforms, including the American Psychological Association. Her areas of expertise include (1) establishing systems of intervention (MTSS, PBIS), (2) policies and procedures around discipline.

Dr. Debbie Sacks

Senior Consultant 

Dr. Debbie Sacks has been an educator for over 30 years and has a passion for improving the lives of at-risk students by providing youth resources, programs, and the personal skills to develop grit and a growth mindset. Debra is also passionate about developing the skills of the adults serving our youth and to increase their impact on positive school culture, including restoring relationships.

Debra has also worked with the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools on the initial blueprint for the CBK program (2008) that has since gained State and national recognition, earned a California School Board Golden Bell Award, and is featured in the American Graduate Series KVCR-PBS documentary (2012). Her dissertation (2013), From High School Dropout to College Success: Student Stories featured subjects from the RCOE Come Back Kids (CBK) Dropout Recovery program.

Her career experiences include teaching high school, continuation high school, adult education, serving as a school principal and administrator for the RCOE Alternative Education Unit, and providing oversight of the High School Graduation Initiative Grant (USDE) to reduce dropouts and increase graduation for students in Riverside County. She is a trained IIRP Restorative Practices trainer, a PBIS coach, and is a certified Mindful Schools presenter/coach.

Steve Hermes

Chief Financial Officer

Steve brings over 30 years of accounting expertise and financial wisdom to CLS. He was a founding partner of Nation, Smith, Hermes, Diamond, the largest locally-owned public accounting firm in San Diego. After 23 years with Nation, Smith, Hermes, Diamond in Audit and Attest services he began a new endeavor in helping to establish Mission Edge, a non-profit company providing financial and operational solutions to other non-profits in Southern California. Currently, Steve serves on the boards of Mission Edge and Sustainable Surplus Exchange, and he teaches Auditing and Managerial Accounting for UCSD Extension.

Joelle Hood

Senior Consultant 

As a Senior Consultant with CLS, Joelle brings over 20 years of educational experience to our clients. As a former "Teacher of the Year" and "Principal of the Year", Joelle brings energy and passion to helping all educators thrive.  She has served as a Principal for Riverside County Office of Education’s Alternative Education programs, and was an Assistant Principal and a teacher for districts in San Bernardino County. She is a Certified Life Coach, a graduate of the UC Berkeley Greater Good Summer Institute for Educators, and a doctoral student in Organizational Change and Leadership at USC. Additionally, she has an SEL Leadership Certification from Rutger's University, and is a graduate of the Year-Long Mindful Schools program.  She provides coaching, mindfulness instruction, professional development, and positive youth development activities to educational, human services, and juvenile justice agencies throughout the nation. Her areas of expertise include Social Emotional Learning and School Climate transformation, including Neuroscience, Mindfulness in Education, Growth Mindset, Resiliency and Restorative Practices. She is also a certified trainer for 40 Developmental Assets, Olweus Bullying Prevention, Restorative Practices, and 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.

Lou Randall

Data Solutions Consultant

Lou brings over 15 years of experience to CLS. He has served as a teacher, assistant principal, and district administrator in K-12 system where he has provided leadership and innovation in the following areas: STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics), Common Core Math, elementary music, PBIS, special education, college readiness, career technical education, NGSS science, data/software application training, and project-based instructional models. Lou has been instrumental in designing software solutions for PBIS data tracking and analysis, administrator observation protocols, suspension event tracking and reporting, grading, and master schedule solutions. He has spoken at several conferences across the nation, and he brings a broad range of experience and expertise as a leader in the field of education. He has a passion for data/technology and for preparing students to be college and career ready in the 21st century.

Kenny McCarthy

Director of Programs 

Kenny joined Collaborative Learning Solutions in 2010 as one of the pioneering teacher leaders in developing the Collaborative Learning ProgramTM (CLP) model. He currently leads a team of teachers and mental health providers through the implementation of the CLP programs in districts throughout California. When he is not working directly in programs, he consults with agencies to improve the quality of programming for students with emotional and/or behavioral disorders.

Christine Fonseca

Senior Consultant

Christine brings over 17 years of experience as a school psychologist and critically acclaimed author. She has served as a School Psychologist, Program Specialist and district trainer in the Temecula Valley Unified School District. Her nonfiction writing delves into the world of giftedness, resiliency, and temperament, offering children and adults a no-nonsense, how-to approach to facing the world without fear. She has taught parenting classes for more than a decade, works with educators to understand ways to support behavior and emotional development in children, understand the social and emotional needs of the gifted, and meet the social-emotional needs of diverse populations. She is also a frequent presenter at statewide conferences on topics related to children and education. When she isn’t writing or consulting, Christine coaches children and parents to work through their anxieties and discover their talents.

Christine has written self-help articles for Parents.com, Johnson & Johnson, Bop/Tiger Beat, and Justine Magazine. Her titles have received critical acclaim from Publisher’s Weekly, the California Association for the Gifted, and VOYA. In 2013, Christine was awarded 2013 Special Achievement Award from the Surrey International Writer’s Conference for her body of work and efforts to give back to the community. Recent titles include Raising the Shy Child: A Parent’s Guide to Social Anxiety, I’m Not Just Gifted: Social-Emotional Curriculum for Guiding Gifted Students and the upcoming second edition of the popular Emotional Intensity in Gifted Students: Helping Kids Cope with Explosive Behaviors.
